Задание:

Answer the questions and speak before the other groups. You have 5 minutes to be ready and 5 minutes to present your ideas.

Learners work in the groups of 3-4. Teacher prepares two discussion tasks for learners. Teacher gives 5-8 minutes for them to brainstorm the ideas and present their findings to the class.

Question 1.
In today’s world, is a phone a necessity for people of all ages, or is it just a luxury item? Why or why not? How do people who grew up without mobile phones feel about this?

Question 2.
Many teachers have concerns about Learners’ use of cell phones at school and in the classroom. Think of three reasons for and against this issue and explain your ideas from your own experience.

1. Today, the role of a mobile phone in a person’s life is difficult to overestimate. With this compact device, we can quickly contact our relatives and friends, work colleagues at any time to find out the information we are interested in. At the same time, you do not need to strain your memory and remember the phone of an old acquaintance who has not been dialed for a long time, the notebook of the mobile phone is always at hand. Many people, in addition to contacts, store a lot of other information on their phone – they record their ideas and thoughts, credit card numbers, memorable dates, various files, etc.
   Today, a phone in our life is not a rarity and not a luxury, although some fifteen years ago, it was difficult to imagine that even small children would walk with a handset in their pocket.
   A mobile phone is an indispensable assistant in a person’s life, it benefits those who value their time and are not ready to waste it. If there were no phone in our lives, we would have to go around a lot of shops and spend a lot of time.
   A mobile phone in the life of some people is also part of the image. People buy certain models to show their belonging to a certain class. Of course, it happens exactly the opposite, more than once I noticed a respectable person in a luxury car with an old phone model. But this is rather an exception to the rule.
   What is the use of a mobile phone for a person in an extreme situation? Anyone who has found himself in difficult conditions and circumstances (perhaps he was on the verge of death) knows what benefits a cell phone carries. Often it is mobile phones that save people’s lives, protect them from danger and help in difficult life situations.
   In recent years, cell phones have become an integral part of our lives. And this is not surprising, because the high rhythm of life, the realization of everyday goals and tasks dictates to us the need to be always in touch and have a faithful assistant at hand.
2. Among the disadvantages of smartphones at school, it can be noted that children pay too much attention to them at recess. Instead of building social connections, students «hang out» in games and social networks. Often, a group of guys gathers around one child and watches him play on the phone, but it cannot be called a full-fledged communication.
   Another problem that one has to face when a student brings a phone to school is social inequality. Owners of smartphones of the latest model and an impressive price tag automatically become cooler than those with a simpler phone. And this is fundamentally wrong: children get authority not at the expense of knowledge or moral qualities, but due to the fact that their parents gave them an expensive gift. In this case, it will be right if the student is explained that it is impossible to be proud of a fancy phone and consider the others worse than themselves, because there is no real merit of the child himself here.
   However, a total ban on the use of any gadgets, including smartphones, at school can lead to the opposite result: the motivation of the student will not increase, but, on the contrary, will fall. Because when gadgets are expelled from school, a wall is erected between it and the «external» life.
   Not all schools are equipped with the latest technology, and thanks to smartphones, which everyone now has, you can use the whole class. In addition, technology is developing very quickly, and now you can choose very good free or inexpensive programs.
