Rules of debate

Team members
Each debate has 2 teams. One team is called the proposition. The other team is called the opposition. Each debate team has learners known as the first speaker for the team, the second speaker for the team, and the last learner is the team`s rebuttal speaker.

The Proposition Speakers:
• Provide the team`s definitions
• Provide clarifications
• Deliver substantive arguments in support of the motion
The Proposition Rebuttal Speaker:
• Defends definition (if challenged)
• Rebuts the Opposition`s substantive arguments
• Defends Proposition`s substantive arguments (if necessary)
• Provides quick summary of Proposition`s case
• Has option to run a constructive argument
The Opposition Speakers
• Provide the team`s definitions
• Provide clarifications
• Deliver substantive arguments against the motion
The Opposition Rebuttal speaker
• Re-changes definition (if challenged)
• Rebuts the Proposition’s substantive arguments
• Defends Opposition`s substantive arguments (if necessary)
• Provides quick summary of Opposition`s case
