Assessment guidelines:
Teacher gives cards about different cities with the description of typical problems in those cities.
Students are to work in groups of three. She/he asks learners to predict what possible
solutions/hypotheses of those problems can be and propose any alternative ideas to cope with
them. After that, they have to present their ideas to the class. After presenting, other group
members evaluate alternative ideas. Students have to pay attention to the use of specific language
patterns to make hypotheses and evaluate proposals. Possible language patterns to make
hypotheses are: the more higher buildings are in the city, the more environmentally friendly areas
appear in it /the more spaces you get, the more opportunities you have to develop/there is a
significant difference in/it can be different from/as a number of skyscrapers increases, the average
number of people who live an urban areas should increase too/the possible solution to this
problem might be.
Possible language patterns to evaluate proposals are: it is a good idea to solve the problem, it is
acceptable, it might be a wrong step to overcome it, you can add “this” to the solution and etc.
Look at the cards, discuss the problems, seek for possible solutions of them and propose
alternative ideas to solve the problems.
