Assessment guidelines
Teacher divides the class into groups of three. One member of the group is designated as Speaker,
Listener, and Observer. They are given topics about specific features of animals.
Speaker chooses a topic that will serve as a focus of conversation. The topic should be one that
Speaker is interested in, has definite views about, and should be one that is likely to generate debate
or disagreement.Speaker and Listener hold a conversation for about three to four minutes. The
purpose of the conversation is for Listener to practise these listening skills: speech, reflecting, and
summarizing. At the conclusion of the conversation, Listener should summarize Speaker’s position,
including Speaker’s underlying logic and rationale. In other words, listener should indicate what
Speakers said and why it was said. During the conversation, Observer is to analyse Listener’s
behavior. The Observation Sheet is designed for this purpose. Each of the questions on the sheet
should be answered by Observer as soon as the summary ends. The sheets will be discussed. The
members who are in the role of Observer find contradictory statements in Speaker’s speech.
Work in groups of three.
Step 1
Assign the roles as Speaker, Observer and Listener.
 Speaker chooses a topic and provides his/her speech about it.
 Listener summarises Speaker’s speech.
 Observer analyses listener’s behavior using Observer sheet.
Step 2
Choose one of the following topics that you have definite and strong views. Support your ideas with
relevant arguments.
 Bats eat certain insects regarded as pests, but bring different diseases
 Eagles kill farm animals, but they are also endangered
 Dolphins in captivity are separated from the school, scientists feel that to help these creatures
they need to observe them in captivity
 Bees provide honey, but their stings can be deadly
Step 3
Swap the roles in the group.
Observer Sheet

Possible answers on the given topics:
1. There are people who think that bats are pests, but actually some bats are pest controllers eating
thousands of insects every night. Consequently, bats have an important role in many environments
all around the world. They can provide a valuable service for agriculture, but it doesn’t mean that
they can not be dangerous. They can be dangerous. But not because they’re set on attacking you or
trying to suck your blood. Bats are associated with diseases, including rabies. In addition, their
droppings, called “guano,” can contaminate soil with a fungus that causes Histoplasmosis, according
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
2. There is no doubt that eagles play a meaningful role in decreasing numbers of farm animals,
which take the major part of agriculture and mostly influence on rural economy. Moreover,
livestock is the eye for nourishment, clothes and in some cases for transporting. From the
26
psychological view, killed farm animals by eagles mean damaged farming business of farmers,
facing the risk of bankruptcy.
On the other hand, using these predators is the useful tool to reach many goals, both- materialistic
and spiritual. This is how in many cultures hunters represent their power and high status in society,
because of the symbolizing them as the strongest creatures and their endangered position. It’s
important to point out that eagles are the part of natural chain together with other biological
organisms, so human beings have no right to abandon or separate them, no matter how far the
negatives outweigh all the positives.
3. Dolphins in captivity are separated from school, scientists feel that to help these creatures they
need to observe them in captivity. In my opinion, observing dolphins in captivity will not help them
anyway. It would be difficult for creatures that lived in their natural habitat to adapt to the limited
conditions. On the contrary, their behavior and actions will vary because they would not feel
comfortable in captivity. Moreover, they will not have opportunities to live among other dolphins. It
restricts them from many essential aspects, therefore there is no need to separate them from their
school to investigate them.
4. Bees are important to people, because they provide honey full of nutrition. There is a list of health
benefits of honey. Honey prevents cancer and heart disease, increases athletic performance, helps to
blood sugar regulation, strengthens the immune system and so on. Unfortunately, despite they
provide honey Honeybees do sting. The sting can be extremely painful if the stinger is not removed
from the skin immediately. Peoplewho are allergic to insect stings can have more severe reactions,
even the death.
