People’s eating habits, although often characterized as a matter of personal choice,
are formed largely under the influence of their food environment. In the “environment leading to the development of obesity”, the joint
actions of manufacturers, retailers, food marketing specialists
ensure the wide availability of products with a high content of saturated fat, salt and/or free
sugars, including in schools and recreation areas, and their affordability in comparison with healthy foods; in addition, products with a high content of saturated fat, salt and/or free
sugars are advertised to such an extent that even in countries where there is legislative regulation in
this area. Thus, regulatory regulation is not only desirable, but also necessary in order to protect people’s ability to make choices.
