Work and inventions

Задание:

The list of inventions below is the information from a major survey in Britain to find the ten best and ten worst inventions of all time. In pairs, decide which column each item goes into – and which two appeared in both the best and worst inventions lists. Then, order the inventions into ‘top tens’. Be ready to answer vocabulary questions, especially about cat’s eyes and the Sinclair C5.

Step 1 – work individually to put these inventions into two columns – the best and the worst. There are two which appear in both columns:

bicycle, radio, nuclear weapons, plastic bag, computer, penicillin, internal combustion engine, landmine, ‘tetra-pak’ carton, internet, light bulb, speed camera, cat’s eye, car alarm, telephone, mobile phone, television, Sinclair C5 electric car.

Step 2 — discuss the lists you have made and explain your choice. Criteria: 1. use of ‘…is more useful / important than…’ or ‘…isn’t as dangerous / harmful as…’ 2. one pro and one contra argument 3. use subject-specific vocabulary

1. The bicycle is the best invention because it is useful for people and for our planet.
2. The phone is also a good invention for people. Thanks to the phone, people get in touch from anywhere in the world. And also the phone has a lot of useful functions.TT
